Question by welshhobbit: if you need to install windows xp to upgrade your computer can this be downloaded through the internet?
my great uncle in newfoundland needs to upgrade his system to windows xp can he download it from the internet and install it that way or does he need to buy a disk from a computer shop? it’s got to be something he can do himself as he’s housebound and i live the other side of the world to him so i can’t help him that way but if i can email him the information on what to do i can help him that way. thanks in advance for any help i receive!

I would imagine the only way is to get the disk through a shop or on line reputable seller. I’m sure the microsoft homepage would be able to tell you this. I’ve never seen it yet, but doesn’t mean it wouldn’t exist. It sure would be a very big file to get through the pipeline, that’;s for sure.

He would need to get an actual disc, although he can order one over the internet. Amazon.ca appears to be selling it, as does newegg.com, or he could go through a local store if they have a web site. But I wouldn’t trust downloading something like this – there aren’t any legal downloads and if he downloads a pirated copy it will probably come with viruses already installed. If his computer is old then he should check and see if it will run XP.
He can download UBUNTU or XUBUNTU. They are free reliable and up to date. You should also download it and run it from the CD so that you could give him help if he needs it.
